Milky Way
๐ŸŒŒThe Milky Way โ€” our galaxy โ€” contains 200โ€“400 billion stars. It is one of roughly 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe. And the observable universe is not the whole universe.
// The scale of distances
Earth โ†’ Moon: 384,400 km
Earth โ†’ Sun: 150,000,000 km (1 AU)
Sun โ†’ nearest star: 4.24 light-years = 40,000,000,000,000 km
Milky Way diameter: ~100,000 light-years
Observable universe: ~93,000,000,000 light-years across
// Light has been traveling 13.8 billion years and still hasn't reached the edge
โš ๏ธ The observable universe is NOT the whole universe. It is only the region whose light has had time to reach us since the Big Bang. The actual universe could be infinitely larger โ€” we have absolutely no way of knowing.

Black Holes โ€” The Most Extreme Objects

M87 Black Hole - First Image

First Ever Black Hole Photo โ€” M87* (2019)

The Event Horizon Telescope captured this in 2019 โ€” the first direct image of a black hole's shadow. 6.5 billion solar masses. 55 million light-years away. Exactly matched predictions from general relativity.

A black hole forms when matter collapses so densely that escape velocity exceeds light speed. The boundary โ€” the event horizon โ€” is the point of no return. Beyond it, not even light escapes.

Physics

SCHWARZSCHILD RADIUS

The radius at which an object becomes a black hole. Sun: ~3km. Earth: ~9mm. For a proton: ~10โปโตโด m โ€” smaller than we can physically imagine.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ
Theory

HAWKING RADIATION

Quantum effects near the event horizon cause black holes to slowly emit radiation and eventually evaporate over unimaginable timescales. Never directly observed โ€” but the math is solid.

Unsolved

INFORMATION PARADOX

If black holes destroy information when they evaporate, this violates quantum mechanics. Hawking spent decades on this. It remains one of the deepest unresolved problems in physics.

Types

SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES

Every large galaxy has one at its center. Sagittarius A* at the center of the Milky Way is 4 million solar masses. M87* is 6.5 billion. We don't fully understand how they got so large.

The Big Bang โ€” History of Everything

Cosmic background
๐Ÿ’ซThe Cosmic Microwave Background โ€” light from 380,000 years after the Big Bang, still visible today as faint radio waves coming from every direction. The oldest light in the universe.
t = 0
The Beginning โ€” all physics breaks down
Singularity. Infinite density. Space, time, and energy all began here. We cannot describe what happens before Planck time (~10โปโดยณ seconds). GR and QM both fail.
t = 10โปยณยฒ seconds
Cosmic Inflation โ€” the universe doubles 90 times instantly
Exponential expansion faster than light. Explains why the universe looks the same in all directions (homogeneous). Explains the large-scale structure we observe today.
t = 3 minutes
Nucleosynthesis โ€” first atoms form
All hydrogen in the universe formed in these first three minutes. Protons and neutrons combine into hydrogen and helium nuclei. The raw material for all future stars.
t = 380,000 years
Recombination โ€” universe becomes transparent
Electrons join nuclei. Light can finally travel freely. This moment's light is the Cosmic Microwave Background โ€” still detectable today as the oldest observable signal in the universe.
t = 200 million years
First Stars ignite
Gravity pulls hydrogen clouds together. Enormous, short-lived stars ignite. In nuclear fusion they forge every element heavier than lithium โ€” the atoms in your body were made this way.
t = 13.8 billion years โ€” NOW
A brief window of stars and life
We exist in a rare window between the formation of stars and their eventual extinction. In ~100 trillion years, the last star will go dark. We are extraordinarily early in cosmic time.

The 95% Problem โ€” Dark Universe

Dark universe

We Only Understand 5% of Reality

Everything visible โ€” every star, planet, gas cloud, galaxy โ€” accounts for only 5% of the universe's total energy content.

Dark Matter (~27%) โ€” has mass, doesn't interact with light. We know it exists because galaxies rotate too fast for visible matter to hold them together. Could be WIMPs, axions, or something completely unknown.

Dark Energy (~68%) โ€” causes expansion to accelerate. Possibly a property of empty space itself. Completely unexplained by any current theory. The dominant component of the universe.

๐Ÿ’ญ This is what staggers me most: our most rigorously tested physics โ€” the best theories in human history โ€” describes only 5% of what exists. We are deeply, fundamentally ignorant of what the universe is made of. And we act like we understand it.

The Fermi Paradox

Stars
๐Ÿ“ก200โ€“400 billion stars in the Milky Way. Billions of years of cosmic time. Countless potentially habitable planets. And absolute, total silence. Where is everyone?
๐Ÿ”ด
Terrifying

THE GREAT FILTER

Some step in developing spacefaring civilizations is nearly impossible. Either we already passed it (we are rare) โ€” or the filter is ahead of us, and civilizations destroy themselves before going interstellar.

๐Ÿ“ป
Hypothesis

WRONG FREQUENCY

Advanced civilizations don't use radio waves. Like finding a remote tribe and assuming nobody else exists because they don't use WiFi. We may be listening on completely the wrong channel.

๐ŸŒฑ
Hopeful

WE ARE EARLY

Stars will form for trillions of years. Complex life may require multiple stellar generations. We might be among the very first intelligent civilizations โ€” which is extraordinary in itself.

๐Ÿ”ญ
Hypothesis

THE ZOO HYPOTHESIS

Advanced civilizations observe us and have decided not to interfere โ€” watching from a distance. The silence is deliberate. We're in a protected reserve and don't know it.

Open Questions

?
What caused the Big Bang? General relativity breaks down at t=0. Was there something before? Did the universe emerge from a quantum fluctuation in a pre-existing void? Is "before the Big Bang" even a meaningful question at all?
?
What is dark energy physically? Einstein added the cosmological constant as a mathematical fix โ€” it works, but what IS it? Why does empty space have energy? Why exactly this amount and not more or less?
?
Is the multiverse real? If inflation is correct, it may have created an enormous number of bubble universes with different physical constants. This could be testable in principle โ€” or forever outside science.
